The capital of the German state of Bavaria is embedded in a pictorial scenery on the banks of the river Isar and north of the Bavarian Alps. Historically Munich was first mentioned in 1158 and has grown from a settlement along important traderoutes to a metropolis with about 1.49 inhabitants. In addition, today about 5.6 million people live in the region around Munich. The city, lovingly called the largest village on earth, is still connected to its traditions but also offers an open-minded surrounding for international immigrants.
Munich is the habitat of many national and international institutions, major universities, museums, theatres, galleries and a leading center of science. It is also known as the “Bavarian Silicon Valley” as it is home to companies such as BMW, Siemens, Infineon, MAN, Linde, Allianz, Munich Re, MTU, Krauss-Maffei, EADS, Microsoft andhundreds of young “start-ups”. Besides that, major film and media companies like Burda Publishing Group, ProSieben, Sat.1 Media AG, Bavaria Filmstudios and Arri are based in Munich. And: Munich is the most beautiful but unfortunately the most expensive city in Germany.
If you are looking for Alpine clichés you won´t get disappointed, but the Bavarian city also has many unexpected cards underneath its dirndl.
